Afro DZ ak - "See The World"
I’m tryin to be the change I want to see in the world
But first I gotta see the world
in order to start the process
So I’m travelin the world as much as I can
Expanding my world view
beyond the walls of an office
Cuz I got this- desire to discover the world-
Uncover the pearls that populate
the breadth of this sphere
And I recognize that if I want to grow as a person,
Then I need to make the most
of every day that I’m here
So I don’t see travel as a means of escape,
But as a way to expand on what I already know
And who knew that travel
would expand my way of thinking
To the point where I incorporate it into my flow
As we go- on a voyage to faraway lands
Sink your toes into beaches of faraway sands
From Morocco to Mexico,
Cape Cod to Cape Town
Wave your hands in the sky
as the waves break down
Your barriers, to see deep under the skin
Takin a journey overseas
can help you journey within
And this self-transformation
is a beautiful development
Cuz travelin the world sparks intelligence
I’m showin reverence
to the beauty of the world that surrounds us
Despite the war and suffering that hounds us
Cuz yo- peace and love is what I kick in these raps
Cuz music’s a global movement
here to bridge all these gaps
Chorus
Afro D: See the World… Be the Change
Tash Makengo: Wanna see the World
Verse 2
I’m tryin to be the change I want to see in the world
But first I gotta see the world in order to understand it
So I’m travelin the world as much as I can
Expanding my world view
to include the whole planet
So when we hand it-
over to the next generation
They’ll know more about the world
than all that TV station
Propaganda- that tells you America’s always right
And the way to make peace is to fight
But I see young people shinin the light-
with a thirst for knowledge
But then the water runs dry
before they make it to college
Workin at Mickey D’s-
punchin that time clock
No chance to see the world
cuz they ain’t even left they block
Real national security lies in education
Raisin diplomats, doctors,
women and men with patience
Teachers, artists, poets and politicians
People of all professions
committed to make a difference
But I see high school students
dropping out like flies
All these children left behind
with those glassed-over eyes
No wonder they’ve lost all desire and willingness
When standardized testing’s
the only thing on the syllabus
It’s silliness- this sad state-
something must be done see
When Black students be thinking
that Africa’s a country
And it’s obvious our system is flawed
When fighting in Iraq’s the only chance
for many of our youth to “study abroad”
Chorus
I’m tryin to be the change I want to see in the world
But first I gotta see the world in order to be effective
So I’m travelin the world as much as I can
Expanding my world view
to stay true to the collective
Cuz we all connected-
though some don’t know it
And we can all help each other-
though some don’t show it
But music is that element that transcends barriers
I’m talking global jam sessions-
the more the merrier
Speakin through guitars-
speakin through drums
Music possesses you
like you were speakin in tongues
And people who normally would never speak to each other
Brought together musically
like they were sisters and brothers
From dancin to some Soukous
with my cousins in Congo
To celebrations in Cuba-
payin homage to Shango
Santeria in Havana-
then we headin to the club
To hear those real Latin Jazz sounds that I love
Voyageons à Paris au Caveau des Oublièttes
Ironically that’s a night that I will never forget
Jazz musicians speakin to each other
through improvisation
So I had to grab my trumpet
and join in the conversation
Elevation on a global scale is somethin truly radical
And music as a tool for change
is somethin truly magical
That’s why I’m tryin to build with love
–that’s international
Cuz music is an Afro DZ ak that’s all natural
